New website, new blog, first post
Greetings everyone! Thanks for checking out our new website, sorry it is so scantily clad, content-wise. This first blog post is my first attempt to change that. I don't want to just write for the sake of writing so I am going to answer a few frequently asked questions about Dark City Brewing Company and share the link to the most recent article about our progress that went live on 11/20/2014 on the Asbury Park Sun. First things first, let's get to answering some of your questions:
Why did you choose the name Dark City?
I'm sure most of you are already aware because I get asked it all the time and it is in every bit of press that we have been mentioned in, but I will state it here as well. The Dark City is the nickname (click the link for a full list) for the city of Asbury Park. It is also sometimes referred to as City by the Sea and was also referred to as Wonder City at one point in the past. The name was derived primarily as a reference to the post-riot urban decay experienced by the city in the latter half of the 20th century, but also is illustrative of the lack of adequate street lighting on many side streets.
We chose the name Dark City because we love the city for all that it is and all that it has been. There is so much history, positive and negative, and the town survived it all and is thriving today. We are truly honored to be a part of the town and to be becoming part of it's rich history by being the first brewery in Asbury Park.
How big is your brewing system?
In an attempt to maintain the craft/small batch aspect of our beers we started relatively small with a 7 barrel brewhouse and three 15 barrel fermentation tanks. We will be brewing two identical batches each day to fill the tanks. For those who don't know, 1 barrel is equal to 31.5 gallons. So we will be producing about 472.5 gallons of beer in each batch.
Are you hiring? I want to get involved, how can I help?
We are so appreciative of the tremendous amounts of love and support we have received from everyone who's approached us throughout town or messaged us on Facebook, words can't really describe what it means to us all. That being said, as a small start-up brewery, money is tight and we have a really small yet capable team already set in stone. We aren't going to be open for a while but hopefully when we open, growth occurs and we can start adding to the DCBC team.
In regards to getting involved in any other way, the build out process of the brewery and the tasting room is a long, drawn out process that I (Kevin) am not even getting involved in. I am leaving all of the painting, electrical, plumbing, sweeping, mopping, decorating to the professionals. I will just be there providing a little bit of direction.
When are you going to open?
That is the trickiest question of them all. We have come a LONG way in the last few months but we still have a long way to go. There are several possibilities of when we are actually going to be open,. If you ask us when we would like to be open, we will tell you yesterday. If you ask us when we think we will be open, we will optimistically tell you we are hoping for this summer. The truth is, we are very early in the build out stage and we could hit some snags, there is also the licensing portion that is relatively out of our hands. We will do our best to keep things moving forward and to keep you all informed, but the truth is, we don't really know the answer at this time.
